There are a large number of directories on the internet today, Many of them, especially the older ones, are custom coded. Recently, however, there has been an explosion in scripts that make becoming a directory owner very simple indeed.
Some of these scripts are free, generally because they include a link back to the developer's site, whilst others are available at different price points.
Listed below are a few of the more well known directory scripts, along with a brief description of each.
Biz Directory
The bizdirectory script can be used free of charge, as long as you keep the links at the bottom of each page intact. For $50 these links and the copyright notice can be removed. Whilst you are not permitted to alter the code, you can customise the look of your scripted directory.
Requirements : you will need to run a server compatible with PHP4 and MySQL3

phpLinksDirectory
The phplinksdirectory script is totally free to use but does have a link back to the main site at the bottom of every page. As long as you leave the coding intact you are free to customise your directory in any way.
Requirements : your server must support PHP and MySQL
Features:
Can be made search engine friendly through the control panel
Supports an RSS feed
Displays latest links, links with most hits
Offer featured listings (collects payment through paypal), free listings with nofollow tag automatically added
Email notifications to both administrator and submitter.
