Hosting reseller basics

This is where a reseller buys a Web hosting package from a hosting company and tries to sell it on independently. The reseller can profit either because they have bought the space up front at a discounted rate or because they are acting like an affiliate and gaining commission.

For example, you may buy hosting from a company for $80 and sell it on for $100, making a profit of $20.

Alternatively, you could earn commission from the hosting company by referring new customers to them and then receiving a percentage of their fees for as long as they continue to host their site with that company.

There are many web hosting companies that offer these deals as it allows them to gain new custom without having to pay out for the direct marketing themselves.

As a reseller you may also have the option of offering associated products such as domain names, web building packages and anything else that the web hosting company normally offers to its customers.


To be a reseller by means of referring new customers is very simple and potentially free - the only costs are any advertising you may do to promote it yourself.

To purchase a reselling package is a little more expensive but there are companies that offer low rates for small packages if you search around the internet.

If you are new to reselling then it would be advisable to start small and then look for more options as you grow. With enough experience and capital you could buy your own servers to do the hosting yourself, but obviously you would then be responsible for server maintenance costs.

To become a reseller does not require a great deal of computer skill - administration and marketing are the areas you will cover most.

A good place to start advertising is relevant forums - use their services for sale section and make sure you market your service through your forum signature. As profits increase you could go down the ppc route.
